ADT Cancellation Fees: How Much Does it Cost to Leave?

Breaking up with your home security provider is rarely as simple as clicking a button. If you're looking at your ADT is one of the largest residential security providers in North America contract and wondering if you can walk away without losing a chunk of your savings, the short answer is: probably not, unless your contract has already ended.

The reality is that most people sign up for these services on a long-term commitment. Because the company often covers the initial cost of the hardware, they bake that investment into your monthly bill. If you leave early, they want that money back. But here is the good news: while there is a penalty, it isn't as brutal as some of their competitors.

The Cost of an Early Exit

If you are still in your initial contract term-which is typically 36 months, though 24 months for those in California-you'll face an early termination fee. ADT doesn't just pick a random number; they use a percentage-based formula. Specifically, you'll owe 75% of the remaining monthly service charges for the duration of your contract.

Let's put some real numbers to that. Imagine you pay $50 a month and you have 10 months left on your agreement. Your remaining balance is $500. Instead of paying the full $500 over the next ten months, you can pay a lump sum of $400 (75%) to end the contract immediately. While $400 feels like a lot, you're effectively saving $100 compared to staying until the end.

Depending on which service tier you chose, these fees can vary wildly. If you cancel very early, you might be looking at a bill anywhere from $833 to $1,418. However, as you get closer to the finish line, the cost drops. If you're only six months away from the end, that penalty might only be between $167 and $284.

When You Can Cancel for Free

There are a few scenarios where you can escape the penalty entirely. The most common is simply waiting out the clock. Once your 24 or 36-month term expires, your account automatically flips to a month-to-month plan. At this stage, you can leave whenever you want, provided you give 30 days' notice. There are no termination fees at this point because the company has already recovered its equipment costs.

There is also a specific window called the 30-day renewal period. If your contract just ended and you are in that first month of the renewal phase, you can usually terminate without paying a penalty. Timing is everything here; if you miss this window, you're back to the 30-day notice requirement.

Then there are the "out" clauses. If you've just started and the service is a disaster, ADT has a six-month money-back guarantee. If you can prove they failed to deliver the service promised in your contract within those first six months, you can cancel without a penalty. Additionally, if ADT decides to raise your monthly rates mid-contract, you have the right to object in writing. They will either keep your old price or let you out of the contract for free.

The Logistics of Cancelling

Here is the part that trips people up: you cannot cancel your home monitoring systems via email or a web portal. You have to pick up the phone and call their customer service line. Because this is a manual process, it's the best time to negotiate. When you're on the phone with the agent, ask if there are any fee reductions available or if you're eligible for a partial refund.

Keep in mind that the 30-day notice rule is strict. If you're on a month-to-month plan and forget to give notice, you might see an extra charge of $37 to $63 for an additional month of service. A pro tip for timing: if your billing cycle renews on the 26th of the month, call to cancel around the 22nd. This prevents you from being charged for the following month's service.

Once the paperwork is settled, ADT will typically send you a prepaid box. You'll need to pack up the security equipment and ship it back. If you don't, they may deduct the cost of that equipment from any refunds you were expecting.

The Risk of Just Stopping Payments

It might be tempting to just stop paying the bills and hope the company forgets about you. Don't do this. ADT treats unpaid balances as a debt. If you stop paying, they will first discontinue your monitoring service, but the debt doesn't go away. They can charge interest on those missed payments, especially if you financed your equipment.

After about 90 days of silence, they can report your delinquency to credit bureaus. A hit to your credit score is far more expensive in the long run than paying a 75% termination fee. In some cases, they may even move to repossess the equipment if it was financed through them.

Should You Pay the Penalty?

Deciding whether to pay the fee depends on your long-term plan. If you are moving to a new home where ADT isn't available, or if you've found a significantly cheaper DIY system, paying the 75% fee is often a smart financial move. You save 25% of the remaining contract cost and stop the monthly bleed immediately.

Another advantage is that once the contract is settled, you own the hardware. Depending on the model, you might be able to use that same equipment with a different security provider, meaning you don't have to pay for a whole new set of sensors and panels.
